Re:START Pop-Up Container Mall, Christchurch City. Boutique fashion stores, cafes, banks, and a food court as well as some of Christchurch's most iconic retailers

Eight months after the February earthquake, Re:START mall was officially opened on the 29th of October 2011, at the site of the old City Mall. Re:START marked the first return of retail to central Christchurch since the quake. 1000s flocked to the opening, and today the mall is a bustling centre of activity and is setting the standard for the continuing quality of new architectural and public space design in the city.

Re:START Store Front Re:START Alleyway Cafe and Street Art in Re:START Mall

Built entirely out of shipping containers, the Re:START mall is a wealth of colour, setting itself apart from the concrete greys of the city's demolition and reconstruction. Brightly painted container-stores form two horseshoe alleys off the main pedestrian mall, with large artworks and funky street furniture that dot the surrounding urbanscape adding splashes of life and character. The containers-come-stores are designed to be removed and re-used on another site as they are replaced by more permanent structures in the future, perpetuating growth in the city.

Re:START now offers over 30 stores to the public; boutique fashion stores, cafes, banks, and a food court as well as some of Christchurch's most iconic retailers such as the Ballantynes department store and Scorpio Bookshop currently make their home here.
